I have a 1978 Volare coupe. It has a lockup torque converter and the "heavy duty" transmission option. From what I've read, heavy duty means that it has a heavier mount and different gearing. I have recently changed the mount as the old mount was original and I could move it around by hand. Since changing the mount the transmission makes a lot of growling noise when in 1st and 2nd. The noise gets louder with more load (i.e. more throttle or more people). The noise does stop when the transmission shifts into 3rd. There does not seem to be any slipping and the shifts are firm and at the right RPM. I have changed the U-joints, differential fluid, transmission fluid and filter without any changes. The growling follows engine rpm. I have checked all of the obvious things like exhaust rubbing, pinched hardlines, etc. Does anyone have a suggestion? I am now thinking that the noise is coming from within. What do I check next? Thanks for all of your help!!! |

First thing to check is whether the transmission or anything attached to the transmission (cooler lines, etc.) is hitting the floor pan. If the new mount is not exactly the right one, or isn't installed correctly, the trans can get pushed against the floor and send a lot of noise into the car. There is no different gearing with the "heavy duty" transmission option, by the way. |

Dan, Thanks for the reply. I have checked on several occasions to make sure that something isn't hitting, pinched or rubbing. I cannot find anything. The closest this is the exhaust (where it is support by the bracket on the trans output). I have re adjusted this to ensure lots of clearance just to make sure. As far as the mount goes, I did originally buy the non-heavy duty mount but it was obviously the wrong one. I went back and picked up the heavy duty mount which looked like the one I was replacing. I took the weight off the transmission undid the transmission cross support, removed the mount, installed new mount, reinstalled the cross support and then removed the jack. I could go back and loosen/re-torque the bolts if you think that it would help. Thanks again, Tom |

Can anyone tell me what the number stamped on the case of the transmission means? I found a guy with a spare but I think that it was for an 85'. I want to know if it is compatible. The number is: 2023312k7313 Thanks, Tom |
