Post subject:  brake bleeding help

So I thought I would do a simple but complete brake job. changed both front drums, turned down the rear, new front lines, all four wheel cyl and new shoes, had to replace all hard line except for the line going from the prop valve to the rear. the problem now is when I bleed the brakes starting with the rear passenger side (after about the 4 time) not air but then the peddle feels soft, bleed it about 3 to 4 times and move to the next. Still no air present. after the rear driver side on to the front passenger side and it doesnt show any air in the lines either. last the driver front, everytime I go to bleed this one it has alot of air and the peddle never firms up. I dont see any leaks in the line that ive replaced. Is it possible that the master cyl is worn out? or am I just doing something wrong?

If the master cylinder doesn't have a residual pressure check valve and the wheel cylinders don't have expanders in the cups you can suck air into the system. I would check the driver's side front wheel cylinder first and then the master cylinder.

What year of car would have the residual pressure check valve? The car im working on is a 68 valiant. The master cylinder that is on it has the center bolt down top. I have to go to parts store tomarrow anyways (oil pressure sending unit for the wives truck). So if the wheel cyl is missing the expanders it will let air in but not let fluid out?

If you replaced the wheel cylinders, they generally come with expanders, these days. It's likely you have to bleed the master cylinder.

We did that too. I'm replacing that wheel cyl and master cyl this weekend.

okay quick question... I switched master cylinders and the old one didnt have the snap ring in the back to stop the piston from traveling to far back. seeing that thats the front brake res is that where my air was coming from? I bench bled it and installed it but couldnt finish the job since the parts guy order the wrong part for the wheel cyl that wouldnt bleed out so early tomarrow morning i will find out.
