Post subject:  Air filter cover gasket.
Hello everyone :) First day on the boards and love it - loads of info - I may spend more time reading than working on the car.

Anyway I am restoring my poor old air filter housing and I would like to replace the gasket on the cover - any suggestions would be appreciated before I spend hours on the phone and driving about the city trying to find something suitable.

Hi Mark, and welcome! What car, model, year do you have? From experience, a picture of the problem part is always a good thing, if it is possible.

oops - still on a learning curve here - I have a 71 Valiant 4 door - the air filter housing looks to be the standard stock part for the slant 6 225 which is what is in the car.

I will browse the DMT site that Dan posted.

Is this a necessary gasket to have? I can see doing it to make it look nice or restore it correctly....but does it actually better the driveability in any way?

Yep. Driveability + economy are best when all the intake air (except the small amount coming from the crankcase breather) comes through the thermostatic snorkel. The way to achieve that is with the lid gasket in good shape.

The gasket Dan pointed me too is 6 dollars and the lid and gasket are in terrible shape so down to bare metal and a fresh coat of paint - I thought I would treat the poor old girl and get her a few new gaskets - hehe.

I have totally neglected the engine in the 10 + years I have had the car - raising 3 boys and running your own business can do that to a car - lol.

I am having loads of fun working on it but it is like all things tedious however I hope to have her back together and on the road this summer.

I will try to throw some pics up soon - she used to be butterscotch - ewwwwwww - then she was a ford midnight blue - please don't flame me although I do deserve it - then she was a dark metallic blue and now due to my wife's aversion to lime green she is the stock lime green from a 69 dart (I think that the colour) - the car has seen a lot of paint over the years and the green is shocking but it does grow on you.

I think over the last several days I have spent as much time reading these boards as I have working on the car.

I got a chuckle out of your sig Kidd - my wife claimed "my" Valiant years ago.

I have a huge list of little things I need but I have to spend carefully atm.

This was taken when the car was Midnight blue - it was a great color because it looked black in the right light - I really did like it that color :)
