Is it possible to change 3rd gear in the A 833 to the A 833 overdrive gear and flip the shifter to make the A 833 an overdrive? I like the idea of the A 833 overdrive, but I'm kind of sceptical of the aluminum A 833 OD housing, among other possible weaknesses in the OD tranny. |

You need to change all the gears and shafts as a set. It is possible to take all the gears / shafts out of the aluminum case OD trans and install them into a cast iron case. The front bearing and bearing retainer for the cast iron case will have to be used to do this swap. DD |

Thanks Doc, Maybe I'll just go another route. Might go with a 5 speed conversion. |

Once you look at how the A-833/OD is set up it becomes obvious that the countershaft gear set is one machined chunk of iron for all the gears...So you have to match the gear sets together...We have known that the rear splines on the mainshaft had changed, but recently I busted open 3 trannies to have one A-833 OD put back together in an iron case...It was interesting to see that between 1975 and 1976 the gear pitch changed and the 1975 gears (main and countershaft) wouldn't quite fit properly to the 1976 gears.... The T-5 would be a good one to use and soon it looks like there might be a bellhousing with adapter to make this almost a bolt in. -D.Idiot |

Thanks for the info. I'm running a 904 right now. The motor needs a real good tune right now. I adjusted the valves and timing when I first got the car because the car would fall on it's face if you slammed your right foot on the floor. Valve adjustment and timing helped, but I think it's over carbed. Need some serious head work and cam. I think a manual of any kind would help. |

Just keep your eyes open for an OD with the cast iron case. I see them at Carlisle every year for cheap. Rick |

Thanks Rick, My buddy gave me an old 833 from a 64 A body complete with shifter and bell housing. I believe it's probably the old wide ratio. Not so sure how it would respond behind a slant. I'm thinking the RPM's will fall too hard. It has the old flange type tail shaft. If I was more of a tranny guy I could probably come up with some sort of parts swap and make a closer ratio. The 28 is fairly light and I'm running 4.10 gears in a chevy 12 bolt. If you guys have any cool ideas let me know. |
