Hey,

I'm in Australia and looking into building a turbo slant....but my problem at the moment is pistons. I have found a set of dished slant pistons here which were originally fitted to truck motors to lower the compression but they are a weak piston that won't be suitable. So...are there any pistons from other makes that will suit the slant available in the US?

Most pistons available in Aus. cars that have the correct bore size have a lower comp. height making them unsuitable.

I have heard about the use of the ?2.2L turbo pistons but these appear to be too low in the comp. height also. Is there any way to get around this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers,

Brad

Brad,

You have several possible options.

The easiest, work wise, would be to get custom racing pistons made for about $500/set from Arias or JE or a similar company. They can make any compression ratio forged pistons to go right onto your 225 rods.

The 2.2L pistons work well "out of the box" with 198 Slant rods, which can be had by mail order from the states for about $200 a set. These work with your stock crank and all other engine parts. The 198 rods are 7.006" long vs. the 6.7" of the 225 rods. You can also get custom rods from Cox Bros or others.

Another option would be to deck the block and mill the head (a lot) to regain compression when using a lower comp height piston. For the 2.2s, you would have to take off a combination of about 0.250" to get into the right comp range. Heads and blocks have been successfully milled up to 0.150" each.

Yet another would be to offset grind the crank, or weld and offset grind, to increase your stroke. Then you could use those pistons and would get more cubes to boot. Doug has done a 4.5" stroke motor, and 4.25" has been done more commonly.

Of course, combinations of offset grinding, milling, and piston and rod choices may also work well.

Cheers,

Lou
