How do you adjust the distributor advance? I would like to run more initial timing, but this would necessitate decreasing the total timing advance in the distributor. Any way to do this? Thanks Mitch m5black@aol.com |

Any way : to do this? : : Thanks : : Mitch Mitch, You have to pull out and disassemble the distributor (at least the top advance plate), then weld or epoxy some spacers into the slots that the advance weigh pins ride in. Maybe try filling the slots to reduce travel by 1/3 to 1/2. This will decrease the advance spread, or difference between initial and final mechanical advance. Lou |

Any way : to do this? : Thanks : Mitch There are many different "slot plates" (cam plates) with different slot lengths and many different spring combos. so if you have some extra distributors, dis-assemble a few to see what parts are in them. The shortest plate slots I have seen will have a "11.5X" stamped into it. (equals 23 degrees of mechanical advance, measured at the crank) The 11.5X plate allows you to run 7 to 10 degrees initial advance and still get 30-33º total advance. If you want more initial, weld / epoxy the slots or look for super heavy - big loop secondary springs to try. Use one light spring for off-idle fast advance and a heave big loop spring to set the max. mechanical advance. Here is a tip, it is best to have the advance springs control - stop the advance at the needed max. RPM rather than have the advance weights bottom-out hard at the ends of the slots. When the weights bottom-out at the end(s) of the slots, they can bounce or flutter and that causes hight RPM mis-fire problems and power loss. DD |

Thanks Doc. The tips are appreciated. I would like to run more initial timing and, of course, this necessitates decreasing the advance in the distributor. Right now, I'm at 12 degrees initial, but the car drives better with more. I have several different spring sets. I'll change a few things around and hopefully go in the right direction. Mitch Quote:
