Post subject:  Alum to iron conversion: oil fill question
Hello, folks.

I'm back!!! :roll: After putting the 1980 iron block engine in the '61 Plymouth and finding we had no oil pressure, we removed the engine once again and tore it down and did a complete overhaul. What we have now is a new engine...and still no oil pressure. However, the pump WILL make pressure...it's sucking air. We have deduced that we change the alignment of the suction tube in the pan slightly (even though the manuals say NOT to do this, for obvious reasons). Here is our question: we have 4 quarts of oil in and we're still sucking air. How much can we SAFELY put in this engine without damage? We would like to go the "overfill" route if we can instead of pulling the engine once again, removing the pan, and resetting the suction tube. Information ASAP would be GREATLY appreciated! The engine looks great and we would really like to move on to the body work! LOL!

The oil pickup is cracked, poor fitting into enigne block or worn out pump. Use correct pickup with oil pan.

Thanks, but the oil pickup is NOT cracked, as it has been removed, cleaned and reinstalled when we tore the engine down. Nothing wrong with the parts! It's just not sitting down in the pan as deeply as it did originally, thus it needs more oil in it than recommended to submerge.

It takes 5 quarts with new filter,according to my manuals.There are also measurements of where the pick up is supposed to be clocked in the manual.I like the pickup with in a 1/4 inch of the bottom of the pan.I also use teflon tape on the threads where the pickup goes into the block.Mark

I've only dealt with the rear sump truck pans and there's no way the pickup in those could be 'clocked' enough to not get some oil.Mine would hit the pan if not installed fairly 'level' so I'm voting for some other problem.I suppose the pickup could be installed 90 degrees or more off level and be completely unsubmerged in oil or a way wrong pickup but I'm not up on car pans and I'd think it would hit the crank? Puzzling for sure :?

If you have four quarts and can't pick up oil, there is definitely something the matter with the pickup pipe -- period, believe it or don't. Find another one and install it with the correct oil pan. You cannot just add a whackload more oil and hope to band-aid the problem.

Hello,
This problem happened on the other side of the pond last August.
Have a read and see how many similarities there are with your engine.
