I just had my 2 barrel rebuilt. I replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump and the lines to the carb. My gas is from a 5 gal bucket of clean gas. Fuel is coming into the carb but it will not sit and idle. It will restart on its own without adding gas.
I have checked all of the lines for gas lines for leaks. Also checked the vacumm lines and don't see any lines loose or not connected. I adjusted the idle up but it still dies. As long as I touch the gas pedal it will run. The adjustments screws at the front of the carb are set at 3/4 turns each. I increased the screws 1/4 turn up to 1 1/2 turns.

The preferred method is to read the technical materials included in the link Dan provided.

Shadetree mechanic wisdom regarding mixture screw settings on a stock BBD on a stock slant six it so begin adjusting the idle mixture screws at two turns out each. Turn each screw out 1/4 turn until the motor begins to idle rough, then turn each screw in 1/2 turn. Reset the curb idle speed until it is with spec, then adjust the mixture again. Repeat as necessary.

Double check your base timing is correct as well, and get a vacuum gauge on the motor to see what your idle vacuum is.

For what it is worth, I have had stock BBDs on stock slant sixes idle properly with the mixture screws set anywhere from 1 1/2 turns out to 3 turns out.

Reed's right; there's no particular number of turns (or fractional turns) that is the "correct" setting for the idle mixture screws.

Thanks for response, I think the timing is not an issue, it fires up quickly and takes the gas well. After this round of showers passes I'll open the adjustments and see what we can find.
