Does anyone have any ideas on why I have smoke coming out of dash vents? Its a 64 Valiant and the vents are the ones facing up on the top of the dash. Just got it running again after 3 years...thanks for any help on where to look...Mark |

What color smoke? It could be oil burning off the engine after hibernation, or (less likely) wires burning. I'd bet it's just the oil seepage burning off. |

well first off is it smoke or sweet smelling steam? does it leave some oily buildup on your windows? if it is steam with a sweet smell than it would be a leaking heater core. do not run it this way long. if you do the antifreeze will leak out of your heater box and stain your carpet.. (read destroys your carpet, as it did my 65 coronet) |

If it smells sweet, suspect a leaking heater, but if it smells like woodsmoke, see if the heater resistor has started burning debris in the plenum - a mouse nest in mine did that and made a lot of smoke. |

I will check those things out. I have not detected a particular smell to it but it does seem to be more the consistency of steam than burning oil. Doesn't do it until the engine warms up either so could be either one. Ill try and get someone else to smell as my smeller doesn't work all that well..thanks Mark |

They're still available new, but quality is often very poor, with thin metal and big gaps between the core and the brackets. Better to have a radiator shop re-core your existing unit. |

I recommend getting it fixed. Might not really need the heat, but you will want defoggers, for those cool, humid, Florida morning and evenings. Especially if it raining. |

Like Charlie said, you may want to get it fixed. However, you can bypass it temporarily. |

I got a good heater core from $$$Year$$One$$$ about 10 years ago. I actually paid extra for the extra package insurance, which was a good thing, because UPS mashed it en route, as they tend to do. The replacement for the mashed one was in good condition, and good quality. |

Good point Charlie. I will see whats involved in its removal. Just had the radiator redone here locally and it was about a hundred bucks. |

Get the heater core, bring the car up here. Have it done in a couple of hours. Just be carefull with the case. After all these years, they tend to get brittle, and crumbly.

Thanks for the offer Charlie. I will schedule a visit soon. Have a few other projects to complete on the car before I feel comfortable driving it 3 or 4 hours. Brakes for one lol. Anyway I will let you know...Mark...come to think of it though if I don't make any stops who needs brakes anyway! |
