What is the best / easiest way to tell whether the gas gauge is kaput - or the sending unit is at fault? car is a 65. gas gauge pegged at E, all other gauges work properly. |

Pull the wire off the sender and briefly ground it (a second or two) with the ignition switch "on", while a helper watches the fuel gauge. If it moves at all, then the problem is likely either a bad sender or a sunk float on an otherwise-good sender assembly. Float: Ford P/N COAZ-9202-B Strainer "sock": GM P/N 5651 705 Gasket: Chrysler P/N 6031 475 Sender grounding clip: Chrysler P/N 2258 862 Could also be a bad wire between sender and dash, though. |

Ford seems to have lost their minds on fuel sender floats. One dealer near me wanted $17 another wanted $19. I found mine at Auto Krafters, P/N 15309, for $6.95/$11 and change with shipping: http://tinyurl.com/7cpcn6h My old one is still rattling around in the tank behind the seat where I dropped it along with a fish net I was trying to retrieve it with. One day I'll get time to remove the tank and dump them both out. Danny |

I'm having the same issue with my Vera. Also a 65 with the gas gauge pegged at E.....Now, when you replace the sending unit, does the tank have to come all the way out? |

It should come out by supporting the body on the rear frame rails and letting the axle drop out of the way. |

Not to be a smart a** , so you "saved" how much money? my math has been slipping lately.. but if was for the lack of wanting to 'give' money to FoMoCo, I guess thats ok also...
