Need some help. I replaced all the bushing in Ryan's Dart (72 Swinger) and I put the strut rod washers on the way they came off. They have the curve outward. That looked wrong to me but that is how they came off. Now a year later one of the nuts backed off and I wanted to find out for sure if the washers were on right. My 65 plymouth service manual has no diagragm for the A-Body. So no help. I looked at my 65 car and they are on with the curve in towards the bushing. My 85 Truck also has them in. So I figure Ryan's Dart has them on wrong. Then I talked to another member on the phone and he has a 67 A body and they are turned in, but his 68 has the curve out. So, could someone let me know if I have to disassemble the whole front end to change these or are they on correct? Maybe I'll just put one on each way!

Thanks, Rick :?

I have yet to see a mopar with the curve out...My 1967 came with the stock bushings and the curve was toward the bushing...

Technically withe the curve toward the bushing the washer uses the entire face of it against the surface of the bushing when the strut pulls against it...If you turn it the otherway...you will only be pulling the washer against a smaller area on the bushing and not make full use of it...

I have done 2 pickups' strut rod bushings, this last month; an 83 (mine) and a buddy's '93; the instructions that came with the new Moog bushings as well as the new washers that came with themselves are stamped which way to go; and 1 side (not the one on the "nut" side) the one on the end that bolts to the control arm said to put them on with the curved part facing away from the bushings; weird I thought but I did it how it said to.

Thanks for the response. It is easy enough to turn the outside washer around. The inside one, not so easy.

H'mmm…interesting. What Rob says makes perfect sense. I don't recall seeing a car with the washers installed with the dish towards the bushing, always dish-away, but the FPC appears to show dish-towards-bushing installation.

I guess they have been seen both ways. I agree that with the curve in you would have more support and be using the whole face of the bushing. Since the outside half can be easily flipped I will do that and then he is taking the car in for an alignment. Thanks for the help and observations.

The curve out would be so the struct rod can move laterally without over compressing the bushing in spots.

Still listening. Still no real consensus. It seems like it should be a simple one way or the other.

All 4 of my strut rod equipt vans are cup to bushing plus every one I've worked on over the years were the same.I've got an old Chilton manual(back when they still had good info)and it shows cup to bushing.Maybe different on car suspension IDK

The moog improved bushing calls for the cup outward-- whereas the original rubber bushing might need it inward due to the 1 piece rubber vs the 2 piece design differences.
just a thought. Lawrence

It is funny something so simple is so confusing! I did install the 1 piece bushings not the new 2 piece style. I know that much. So according to that the curve should go towards the bushing ? Who knows! :?

All the old ones I've pulled out are two piece bushing cup toward the bushing, I installed new poly bushings, cup in with no problems to note. Have a set of Norris-Mcquack 1 peice bushings that don't look like they'd hold up which ever way you turned them.

LOL...

Just install and 'ferget' about it at this point, I think...

Try road racing with the old style then you'll know the answer............ matter of preference. It is possible to actually cut the rubber bushing curve in. Been there......... ..done that.

Matter of preference

Interesting. Thanks to everyone. We decided to just torque the loose nut and leave the washers just the way they are. Curve out it is! :)
