Post subject:  HEI problems-help!

It's been a while since I have posted here due to school being busy, but it's finals week now and things are starting to slow down some. It's nice to get back into the slant six and truck work.

I have a brand new Accel HEI module 35361 with an MSD Blaster coil hooked to an electronic distributor that was worked over by DusterIdiot. According to the voltmeter, I am getting 12V at + coil, and 12V at terminal "B" on the module. "C" is hooked to - coil and "W" and "G" are hooked to the distributor; also, the HEI module is grounded. I just swapped over from the stock distributor with the same coil, so I think the coil is working fine. I am getting no spark if I take out a plug and ground it against the block. I barely get a spark when I remove the coil wire from the distributor and see if it will jump the gap between the wire and ground. (there is a tiny spark at the coil, but no spark at the distributor)

Does anyone know what the problem is? A few questions:

How do I test the HEI module to ensure it is working properly?
How do I test the electronic distributor to ensure it is working properly?
How do I test the coil to ensure it is working properly?
What gap should there be between the magnetic pickup in the distributor and the rotor?

Thanks,
Stephan

momentarily put 12 volts on the coil and see if it will put a spark across a spark plug.
The gap should be .008 between the star wheel and the magnet, use a brass feeler gauge.
If you put a volt meter on the 2 connecter points and rotate the distributer you should see some very low voltage less than 1 volt.
Another thing to try if all these check out good is to reverse the leads from the pickup to the module.

I've tried reversing the terminals from the pickup to the module with no significant difference.
By the the 2 connector points you mean the 2 wires coming from the distributor?

Try a known good coil. There has been a rash of bad MSD coils lately. Then try a known good distributor. If neither of those work then try a new HEI module. Also, what kind of heat sink do you have for the HEI module?

pinkiedog64,

What ohm rating do you see across the pick up wires?
It should be 300 to 400 ohms.
