OK...I need some instructions please. My daughter came home with her 225 /6 64 Dart yesterday with it not running very well. When they left the house...it was running just fine. When we bought the car...we found the points had came loose causing it to run about the same as what it was doing yesterday. I checked the points yesterday and the points were just fine. Pulled the radiator cap off and found oil in the cooling system. Check the oil and it was right where it was before they left. Pulled the plugs and they didnt look contaminated. How would I check to see if its a blown head gasket of a cracked block? I dont want to just start pulling it apart and find it wasnt either one... Thanks Rick |

One sign of a possible blown head gasket is lots of coolant smelling steam coming from the exhaust pipe. |

Is the car an automatic? Maybe the trans cooler in the radiator is leaking ATF into the cooling system. You may want to retorque the head, re-adjust the valve lash, flush the cooling system and add a can of stop leak... I would try that before taking it apart. DD |

Yes it is an automatic but the cooling lines dont go thru the radiator...it has its own cooler out front. Do those stop leak additives work that well? Will try the doing the head bolts... Thank you Rick |

Dont know if this makes and difference but... I can pull the radiator cap off and I find old dark oil in the top but if I take the lid off the coolant flush T...the coolant comes out clean. Fresh anti freeze is what comes out. Rick |

Well...I have done the following 1. Replaced points with a pretty good set that I had here around the house. 2. Pressure tested the cooling system and it tested fine. No bubbles and it held pressure. 3. Retorqued head bolts just for giggles. Results... Still bad idle... No smoke or steam from exhaust. What else could I test??????? Thank you Rick |

In the time that it was running fine and came back did she get gas? Maybe she got a tank of water. |

No gas was added on this little trip. This morning I check the vacuum lines to make sure one had not come off and then I did a compression check and compared it to the one I had did about a week ago when we got the car. Numbers were the same in all cylinders...+ or - a little. Could a bad condensor cause this kind of idle issue????? thank you Rick |

Condensors do break down over time. It wouldn't hurt to replace it. You might want to give a peak at the bottom for the float bowl and see how much water is in there.....or rust.... |

Adjust the idle mixture according the procedure specified in the FSM. Adjust the valves. |

Already done! Both the valve adjustment and idle adjustment was right on. I have new plug wires, cap, rotor and condenser on the way. |

ok..I replaced the plug wires, cap, rotor and condenser and its running like a top. All I need to do today is flush the cooling system out and fill it with water. I will watch it for a few days to see if the coolant gets oiled down again. Thank you for all your suggestions.. Rick |
