Post subject:  fast ratio pitman arm

So ive been kicking around the idea of installing firm feels fast ratio pitman and idler arm on my 68 valiant but according to there site you have to use the 73-76 center link and spindles.

FIRM FEEL FAST RATIO PITMAN ARM - $195
IDLER ARM - $90


The fast ratio pitman and idler arms are 1 1/2" longer than the stock arms and will interfere with some brands of headers, check the list below.

A BODY APPLICATION:

'60-'66 Arms will not fit
'67-'72 Arms will fit only with '73-'76 center link AND spindles installed

'73-'76 Arms will fit

So my question is what is the difference between my center link and spindles? I though the center links were the same but the spindles were different. I was planning to later use an after market disc brake kit to upgrade to BBP but not for a while. Will the pitman and idler work with after market kits?

On the early center links (pre '73) the studs for the pitman and idler stick up from the bottom. On later center links the studs point down. Tie rod ends will rotate so they will fit either center link. You can't flip the center link because the drop would then be a hump and want to go through the oil pan.

I don't know why Firm Feel states the later spindles are required. Could be a bump steer issue, but then you'd have a bump steer problem putting '73+ spindles on an earlier car. This doesn't make sense unless it's a common problem that next to no one has reported. Call and ask why.

Now I want to check the bump steer on my '67 Valiant with '73-'76 disc spindles.

BTW, the spindles do not have the steering arm built-in. The steering arm is part of the lower ball joint. If the late ball joint keeps the steering arm and outer tie rod end in the same position as the drum brake ball joint there will not be a bump steer problem from a spindle swap.

When I rebuilt the front suspension on my 64 barracuda I changed center links because of the V8 swap but can't remember what the center link came from. That's why I thought they where the same from 67 thru 76. I already have new upper control arms, upper ball joints and lower ball joints from 73-76 waiting to find spindles calipiers and rotors to complete the set for when I upgrade to big ball pattern.

If you changed center links in a '66 Barracuda and you used a V8 center link then it had to be a '64-'66 V8 A-body center link. The center link became longer in '67 and changed again as I described for the '73 model year and newer vehicles. Also, '73+ power steering cars got a pitman arm with a larger hole to accommodate the larger gear box sector shaft.

You can use just about any '73+ newer A, B/R, or F-M-J body spindle, caliper and rotor. If you want to use positive offset 17" wheels and have the wheel up and over the upper ball joint you have to use the slightly shorter A-body disc brake spindle. You need to use 15" wheels if you use 11.75" rotors.

That's right I pulled the center link from a 66 dart. I was planning on running the FMJ parts with 15" pro star wheels.
