| Post subject: | exhaust manifold/pipe flange question |
I noticed as I pulled my manifolds I have a fat step from my exhaust manifold down to the pipe flange. Its like say the manifold is like 1-1/2" and the center of the flange is like 1-1/4. That seems pretty dumb. are most like that? I would hope not. is there another flange I could weld on the the end of the pipe? what would Jesus do? |

I don't know what Jesus would do, but most of the guys have a new head pipe made to use a larger pipe. Then you would need to get a new exhaust from that point on or live with the small pipe. |

Jesus came and went long before internal combustion engines were on the scene, but many people, including some Chrysler engineers, like a 2 1/4" pipe at the manifold. |

The manifold outlet is 2". Prior to '76, all the headpipes were 1¾" give or take a fraction. Starting in '76, the cars with 2bbl (and some with 1bbl) got a 2¼" headpipe, which is obviously the better option, but is nontrivial to make from scratch. It can be done, but it takes a skillful craftsman. |
