Post subject:  exhaust manifold/pipe flange question

I noticed as I pulled my manifolds I have a fat step from my exhaust manifold down to the pipe flange. Its like say the manifold is like 1-1/2" and the center of the flange is like 1-1/4. That seems pretty dumb. are most like that? I would hope not. is there another flange I could weld on the the end of the pipe? what would Jesus do?

I don't know what Jesus would do, but most of the guys have a new head pipe made to use a larger pipe. Then you would need to get a new exhaust from that point on or live with the small pipe.

Jesus came and went long before internal combustion engines were on the scene, but many people, including some Chrysler engineers, like a 2 1/4" pipe at the manifold.

The manifold outlet is 2". Prior to '76, all the headpipes were 1¾" give or take a fraction. Starting in '76, the cars with 2bbl (and some with 1bbl) got a 2¼" headpipe, which is obviously the better option, but is nontrivial to make from scratch. It can be done, but it takes a skillful craftsman.
