I have searched for awhile and haven't found anything yet quite like what I have. Upon start, oil light stays on for about 2 seconds (depending on crank time - short crank time = light on slightly longer when running), and then goes out which is normal. My pump has the standpipe, and the valve inside is functioning correctly. If I am 1 quart low on oil, and make a right turn, oil light comes on and stays on for 5 or so seconds, even after straightening out. If I take off quickly from a stop, the oil light comes on again, for about 5 seconds. If the crankcase has the full 5 quarts, this never happens. I had this engine apart last year, and upon inspection/re-installation of the pickup tube and pump, there were no issues. This is not the same pump that was on the engine last year. I guess what I am wondering is this: Is it possible that the pickup tube was damaged during the accident last year, even though the pan was not damaged in any way; and, Would an internal issue with the pump be causing this issue? I find it not likely to be an issue with the pump if it only occurs when I am about 1 quart low on oil. I am running the 369 pan, with the stock pickup. Thanks! ~THOR~ |

Which location is your oil sender in? Screwed into the oil pump, or into the block towards the rear? |

Trish?  If it never happens when you have the full five quarts in, don't run it low. Your description is that of sucking air during spirited driving. It's the stock pickup for that pan arrangement, or for the car the engine came out of? Trish?  CJ |

Yes Ceej, Trish. The thing is, I'm not driving hard or fast everytime it happens... Just sometimes. Regardless, I would like to get it corrected at some point. I have a feeling its the pickup tube, but I really don't want to yard out that engine. Its the stock pickup tube for a 77 if I had to guess, but with the 369 pan which is not stock it should be fine. The end of the pickup was just less than 1/8 inch clearance from the bottom of the pan. |

Swap the sender for a new one. I've had senders that get a little flabby and cry "wolf!" at a dip in pressure that's still within normal range. |

Will give that a go... at the same time, I am going to install my pressure gauge, so even if the sender is trying to fool me, I alone will know the truth... Once I get that pressure gauge installed, I will report back and post my findings. ~THOR~ |
