So I drove the 68 valiant to the local friday night car cruise and had a couple older guys interested in my car. Most comments were "man a slant six, you don't see too many of them any more." But the oddest thing I heard was a guy told me that you can time it off the number 6 cly and get 32 mpg. Now I'm not really interested in doing this since I've already had to change one distributor gear already but was wanting to know if he was just blowing smoke. |

Yes, you can time the engine off #6 cylinder as the #1 and #6 cylinders firing event happens at the same crank position. No, you will not gain anything by doing this. This guy sounds like he absolutely does inhale the smoke. |

OK, try this for yourself. Use a timing light set on #1 and see where the timing mark is at, then move the timing light to #6 and see if there is any difference. |
