Post subject:  Electronic conversion + orange box?

Hey I have an original 64 distributor in my slant and I would like to upgrade my ignition system. I've narrowed it down to two choices and I need help deciding on the best setup.

Either I'm going to convert the dizzy to electronic ignition, use an orange box, plus an aftermarket coil.. or I'm going to attempt to convert it to gm HEI ignition.

Do they really differ in distinguishable performance gains? Are there any other modifications that need to be done to the existing system (other than the new componants themselves)?

Just got some NOS tune-up parts and Im a bit nervous to use it with increased voltage and rate of spark.

thanks,

Aaron

The Mopar boxes (any color) are poorly-made junk any more -- don't use them. If you're going to a Mopar-type electronic ignition, use a Standard-BlueStreak or NAPA-Echlin box. Better to go with HEI upgrade.

I would also recommend the HEI upgrade but would recommend that you keep the original springs, vacuum advance can, and governor (if possible) out of your original distributor to try and keep a timing advance curve close to the original one that came with your car.

No need to dissect two distributors to swap springs and bits; the new distributors linked off the HEI article have excellent mechanical and vacuum curves -- generally better than those in a '64 distributor.

Even old dogs learn something every once in awhile. The HEI conversion was one of the best items I ever put on a slant six. The difference between night and day aye*..........thanks to DAN

I would go with the HEI, its much simpler to wire than the mopar ignition.

Ok well HEI it is then :p I already have an assortment of stock/aftermarket coils from my fiero and the module would be pennies at a junkyard.. Can't wait to see what this does for my misfires and throttle response :)
