Hi,everyone! On my 72 Duster /6,the car idles fine, revs up fine, starts right up fine with no effort, but once I start driving and open the throttle,it bogs down ,almost like someone just cut offf the fuel supply and it dies.Even when I do give it full throttle, the car barely moves and it will backfire through the carb(makes a PFFFT!noise)Ive disassembled the carb, had it soaking in carb solvent, blew it all out, sprayed carb cleaner through every orifice on the carb, put a rebuild kit on it and still runs the same.Im sure I set the float right according to the instructions on the kit and my timing seems good(its set at TDC).Im also questioning the quality of the rebuild kit.Its a GP Sorensen from Autozone.Should I get a better rebuild kit?

Do check the fuel supply system -- the pump, the flex hoses, the hard lines, and if there's any suspicion the tank may be full of crud, drop it and clean it. But the problem may well be within the carburetor. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.

So....what if you're getting too much gas? I can't figure out why I'm running so damn rich. Vera's exhaust is so foul smelling and she has been known to spew a little bit of black out her pipe.

SG73, I am betting your 1920 has an internal fault similar to this.

thanks for all the replies :) It was annoyingly windy today so I will look over it tomorrow. The fuel filter is new .but when I got the car, there was alot of foul old gas in it.I will check the fuel delivery and see if there is enough gas getting to it.It just likes to bog and die when I try to give it throttle.

well that is the problem i had until i a line from the tank to the rest of the fuel system. the rubber hose was dry rotted, couldnt get the car above 30-35. had to baby the throttle to keep that speed.

SwingerGrrl73,

I am assuming that the choke is fully open and not partially closed. If your choke pull off is leaking (loosing vacuum) it won't pull the choke open all the way.

When the float is sunk or the height is not set correctly or the needle and seat are old it won't shut off the fuel or regulate it correctly and will run rich.

A new needle and seat will help and so will the correct float height.

Vera is running much better now. I guess it was the girl in me showing thru :)
Must be more aggressive with the tuning of the carb. But, ya know, you see one carb fire you don't want to see another.....

Now I have her idle up a little Too high: she just wants to GO! This has been the problem with her. Get it dialed in, stays that way for a week or so, then bah. But I will keep fiddling with it until I find that sweet spot. She was choking out when I would put the air cleaner cover back on, I have not put that back on since i adjusted the idle...will do that before I hit the highway today.

When you have the idle too high the vacuum pod kicks in and raises it even higher. You need to time the engine it correctly 6 or 10 degrees....check your book and at the right rpm for your motor. Not sure if it is a 600 or 750 on yours. Then make sure the vacuum pod line is plugged into the ported vacuum then everything will settle down.

Well, today I pulled out the fuel sending unit because my fuel gauge stopped working and I found a disintegrating brass float with a hole in it full of fuel(guess it just sank to the bottom, which explains my fuel gauge reading empty all the time)and a very filthy and disintegrating filter /sock.The sock was a very nasty rust color and was falling apart.I connected the gauge wire to the sender while it was out of the tank and had a friend watch the gauge when I moved the float lever up and down slowly and he confirmed gauge movement,so the sender still works good.So I went ahead and ordered a sock and float from Year One.Im also replacing the valve seals while waiting for the sock and float to arrive ,and I am also going to take the fuel tank cleaned out and sealed.ill keep you all posted.looks like I have some work ahead of me ,lol
