65 Belvedere with a S6. cleaned and flushed radiator, all new hoses, waterpump and 180 deg. t-stat. Installed a GM 17" 5 blade flexfan from a 70's caddy! (bolt right on in place of the stock 4 blade).

In all weather, the temp gauge is in the middle of the normal range. Hit traffic, it goes 3/4 up the norm. range.

If I shut the car off and keep the ignition on (so the gauges are live), the temp needle climbs right up to H. Start it up and move some water....it drops right into the normal range.

The sensor is right near the t-stat housing. It this a typical reading?
I'm sure everything is fine, but I"m just curious about this hot spot.....

Completely normal. When you shut off the engine, water flow stops but the metal's still hot. Hot water rises to the top, the temp sender's at the top...and there you are.

That is normal heat soak. If you had an electric fan it would kick on when the temp climbs up and would cool your motor and carburetor down which is great for quick restarts after grocery shopping, etc. No more vapor locking or flooding or having to hold your foot to the floor.........on those really hot days!

I already rerouted the fuel line off the front of the block. It runs over the top of the valve cover now. Nice and cool.. :)

That is one step....next a heat deflector under the carb, then a electric fan.
