Post subject: | What`s my engine? |
Hello I'm new to your forum and not very well know engines SL6, so please forgive me if my questions seem silly. I try to restore my 1971 Dodge Dart & have some questions about this. 1. How do I determine, what is this model of slant6 i have under the hood 170,198 or 225 ? If it is written on the block, then where is it? 2. There is ball&ball 1695 carburetor, but in poor condition. Which model it can be replaced? Sorry for my english/ |

Take a look here (Click on the red text.) Don't know what manifold you have. I'm unfamiliar with the carburetor you mentioned. What is the country this car was produced for? CJ |

So you have a BBS. Gotcha. I don't have experience with Carter 1 or 2 bbl carbs. Perhaps Dan will chime in. He had some NOS carbs at one time. CJ |

First, look for numbers cast onto the side of the block under the intake and exhaust manifolds. Then look for numbers stamped into the top of the block, facing the sky, below the front spark plug, behind the alternator. You will have to clean away the grease to see the numbers.Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. 1695 is not a carburetor number, it is the casting number for one of the parts of the carburetor. The carburetor you identify is a Carter BBS (these have "Ball & Ball" on the side).Show us some detailed pictures of your car including the engine and carburetor, and we'll be able to give more specific advice. There's more info there. Perhaps Dan has his secret decoder ring on today. I don't pay very much attention to the stampings other than engine size. The year is in there as well as info about the build date. How many freeze plugs has it got? Should be five. There should be a casting number on the other side of the block as well. Something like xxxxxx -BH. That's the desired block, though the others are still pretty good. ![]() CJ |

OK, I believe it was built November 5, 1977. Don't hold me to that, 'cause I don't decode very often! ![]() CJ |
