Post subject:  Sender Float: Plastic vs Brass

Is there any real difference in performance, lifespan, etc, between white plastic and soldered brass sender floats?

The new sender (Spectra FG69A) came in for my '64 Valiant, along with most of the other fuel tank stuff. It looks good. The main difference, besides 46 years worth of crud, is the white plastic float.

I have a new brass float on the shelf.
Part of me doesn't want to trust plastic. On the other hand, two brass floats in a row have failed (30+ and 10+ years, respectively).

Comments?

I've had no problem with the plastic replacement floats I've used so far. Some of my old brass ones did leak after 30 years, but none of my plastic ones have seen more than 10 years of use.

I've had brass ones fail after only 2 weeks, and had one hang on 26 years and counting. In my daily driver I'm using a 25 watt light bulb as a float, and it hasn't failed in 5+ years.

I guess it's all in what you feel comfortable with.
