Post subject: | temperature and electric choke |
I have a basic choke question. Scenario: my engine has been shut off for 4hours, but the truck is parked in the florida sun and the temp outside is 95F. I've got one of those electric choke kits installed and the carb is a BBD. When I go out to start the truck I push the pedal to the floor, but the choke stays full open. Is this normal? I'm just wondering if the ambient air is enough to keep the engine "warm". Thanks, |

You shouldn't need to choke it at that temperature. Even when mine sits overnight in summer temperatures, it barely pulls the choke plate shut when I first start it up and it runs fine. As long as you are not getting a balky engine on start-up and early running, it's fine. |

Okay, thanks for the reply. I just wasn't sure. I've been having classic heat soak problems when the engine is warm and then shut off for 10-20 min and restarted...so i thought it might be the choke. I've done the fuel line mod and I'm thinking about putting in a heat shield. It's really annoying running into the store or wherever and then not being able to start it right up. I'm also wondering if it's running rich. I get about 18-19 mpg on the highway(this is in a D-150 pickup) but the exhaust line is sooty and it spits out black soot when i start it up. I know this because if i park next to my white chevy prizm it gets a spray of black soot. I pulled the spark plugs yesterday and they all looked good - tannish to greyish no fouling. Another question if it is running rich what do i do about it? Can i change the jets in a Carter BBD? |

Sure sounds like it running rich to me. People have had good success with heat shields and there might be a thicker base gasket available to help also. Info on the Carter BBD is here: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33102 |
