Post subject:  New Valve seals riding the valves

hi everyone
ok,I installed the new valve seals on my 225 and noticed that it still smoked.So I took off the valve cover and found the valve seals are going up and down and riding the valve.I used umbrella seals for the intake and mushroom type for exhaust.Is there a different kind of seals I need to use?

What are the exact circumstances under which you car smokes? If you have new valve seals, it could be the piston rings that are causing you grief.

[/quote]It smokes at idle and acceleration and deceleration.I did a compression check ,all was good but I know I will show good compression if the oil rings are shot.Whats weird is it dosent consume alot of oil.Im just going to have to face the fact that the motor needs a rebuild =\

You could try Auto RX to see if cleaning out the oil rings helps. At the very least you'd have a cleaner engine to tear down and rebuild. :)

I know I'm a little late on the reply but so you know, the stock type valve stem seals do ride up and down on the valves as the engine is running. The only real job they perform is to prevent smoke on startup after sitting(unless the valve guides are worn out). If the valve guides are worn, then they provide a little more protection against oil going down the guide.


You could have postitive valve stem seals installed after you rebuild the engine. These lock onto the valve stem and stay put. They will last alot longer the OE ones.

Im really thinking it is a ring problem now because it bellows smoke even at idle.and worse at acceleration :shock: .I dont want to waste money on additives and magic formulas that will stop the smoking.If there is one,let me know,lol.But im really thinking rebuild and the weird thing is,my oil level hasnt dropped ,but then again,I barely drive because the smoke is very embarrasing

Hello,
The oil level might be maintaining itself courtesy of a leaking fuel pump.
Your engine has done a lot of work by your comments. But before you tear it down and start a re-build,try this :
Smell the oil,and see if it smells like gas.
If it does,replace the pump,change the oil and filter,and see what effect that has on oil smoke.
Oil that is thinned by gas dilution finds it easy to get past oil rings.
This is not an uncommon fault with slant engines.

when I first started working on my valiant before I changed the oil I noticed the level was higher than before and it was because the fuel pump was leaking so I changed it and then changed the oil and filter.

I never thought about a possible faulty fuel pump,and also my carb has been acting funny like it hesitates at WOT and it has just been rebuilt.Any way of checking the fuel pump before forking the money to buy a new one?And I should also mention,the smoke coming from the exaust does have a rancid stink to it.I just dont want to put any more money into a screwed up motor and I hate just guessing and swapping unnessesary parts

The way to check the fuel pump is above. Sniff the dip sitck. If it smells even remotely like gas, your pump is shot. If you've been driving like this long, so are your bearings.
Change the pump, change the oil and filter, and try again. If this has been going on long, get ready to do some serious work! :roll:

Used car lot trick on smokey cars,put synthetic in it.Wont fix anything and will still use oil but wont smoke going down the road.Sounds goofy but it works.Mark

Fuel pumps are cheap. I would change it.
