Hey Guys, Just a quick, hopefully ridiculously simple, question... Are the 225 Slant 6's still considered fairly reliable? i'm considering buying a Valiant AP5 (I believe they are very similar to the Plymouth Valiant, sharing 6 or so panels). I can remember from years ago hearing that the slant 6's were incredibly reliable- is this the case? I realise it's going to depend a lot on how it's been treated (or mistreated) in the past, but are they suitable to use as an everyday driver? I have limited mechanical experience, but about 10 years ago managed to, with the help of a work shop manual, replace a head gasket a slant, and refit the engine (which had been sitting on a dirt floor), wire it up and get it running and started (all was looking promising until my brother stole the diff), so I feel reasonably comfortable with any minor work which might need doing... and i have found that sourcing parts aren't a issue as there is a fantastic shop in Queensland who seem to have everyting. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, how would they go with aftermarket A/C installed? or am i dreaming there? |

As far as the slant 6, they are legendary for reliability. An excellent design and can be modified for higher performance. It should also work well with an aftermarket A/C. The newer compressors don't use nearly as much power to run as the old ones. Do you have any pictures you can share? |

I bought my ap5 sedan about 9 months ago for $6,000,48000 miles on the dial, was a bit abused by the owner but have been giving it regular oil changes since then and shes going real good.I'm the 3rd owner now and slowly doing her up.Electronic ignition makes a big difference and extractors even better, buy and enjoy a classic cruiser. ![]() |
