ive ben playing with my carb for bout 2 weeks now ive adjusted timing,ive tken the carb apart cleand it spotless . evey time i get it runing it idles fine ,but wen i shift it to drive reverse watever it b .it stalls. ive djusted the carb many times cnt get it rite. ive also tried turning up the idle becouse the vans in the street cant even get it in my driveway.can anyone give me an idea of wat else it could be ???? |

Hey 4X4jimbo, welcome aboard from the former northern district of Taxachusetts... We didn't fall far from the tree. I suspect you have a vacuum leak. What year is your truck, and are all the pollution control items properly hooked up, or removed and caped off? Check for leaks in all the easy places first, such as; un-plugged taps on the carburetor, cracked vacuum lines, brake booster line, and brake booster diaphragm. Check around intake manifold by spraying carburetor cleaner around the mating surfaces at the head. Spray the runners if they are made of aluminum along the seems where the manifold is welded together. Spray around the base of the carburetor one side at a time, and the throttle plate shafts. Check the vacuum advance diaphragm for leaks by sucking on the vacuum hose that comes from it to see if it holds a vacuum, and any other vacuum opperated device you can find, perhaps the air conditioner controlls if so equiped. If all those spots look good, than pull the carburetor to check the flatness its bottom or base, where it joins the manifold, with a straight edge in four different directions: north & south; east & west, south west & north east; and south east & north west. Use a bright light to see any deformities letting light under the edge. Get a new carburetor to manifold gasket if you do end up pulling the carburetor. |

i tryd the vacuum advance trick and its sucking through not easy but its not seald . is this good?? .its 85 4x4 van it only has about 2 vacum lines on the carb.but that does sound possible ill have to get a can of carb cleana tamara thanx ill get bak to u , by the way are u near the east cost or west side |

East coast, since the move a few months ago, we are now seven miles from tidal water. Previously we were only a mile from the northern most green can at the head of navigable waters along the eastern coast. |

Check to make sure your vacuum advance is plugged into ported vacuum. If the vacuum drops off with reduced idle speed in gear, so does timing, and then it goes into a death spriral where less advance=less RPM which leads to lower vacuum which leads to less advance, and then, It dies.. Sam |

wow i have to say you couldnt explained it better .sorry i havent gotten bak i found my intake exhouste maniflod gasket had a small leak on the underside ive rippd everything down now im replaceing all the gaskets thanx jim |

Of course it could be other things. But, that is probably the most common cause of that kind of in-gear stalling. The fact that centrifigal advance kicks in around 1000 RPM means that if your neutral idle is higher than 1000 RPM, that loss of timing when RPM drops in gear contributes to this timing death spiral as well. Check all your tune up specs and parts, and good luck. Sam |
