Post subject: | 1953 T-96 Borg Warner overdrive trans behind 170 1963 Dart ? |
I'm looking to put an OD trans in a stock 1963 dodge dart with a 170. Is a 1953 T-96 OD trans a bolt in ? (besides hopefully just the driveshaft length ?) This T-96 B/W overdrive trans is out of a 1953 Haiser Henry J (6 cyl i believe ?). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also , will the newer style non electric OD transmissions (type No. ....?) that come in a 1975/76 feather duster bolt up to a 1963 170 ? Can someone provide a list of years / vehicles which come with this non-electric type of OD trans. Thx for any help |

This is a manual transmission... if your car is equipped with a manual 3 spd you are 1/2 way there already, you'd need to cut the floor and tranny tunnel for the floor shift hump...use a bellhousing from the 1975-1976 A-body or 1976-1980 F body cars to complete the conversion, to the A833OD...you will have to find a good tranny, shifter, bellhousing, and A/F body shift linkage, and possibly the Z-bar and clutch linkage...etc...If your car is an automatic...you will have to do more modifications for the clutch/pedal/linkage...etc... Modification for an automatic overdrive tranny like the A-500 is going to be a lot of surgery... -D.Idiot |

Thx , I still need to know will the t-96 out of the Henry J. bolt up to the 1963 170 bell housing ? (Yes, the dart is a manual trans car) Also, will the stock 63 dart trans crossmember work with this T-96. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as the 883 OD trans's . i would rather have this set-up. But I don't think they are that easy to find. A list of years/model they came in - would help to locate. Are the ones from a van/truck differant than one from a passenger car ? If so - better / worse ? Identical procedure & parts required to refit into the 63 manual Dart ? Thx in advance for any info. |

As far as I know the A833s in the trucks and vans are the same, they may have a slightly different ratio but the same. The linkages will be different of course. They were avalible in trucks and vans up into the 80's, so look around the next time your at the junkyard. Be carefull though, trucks also had NP-435s, which are low gear truck transmissions. Vans only had the A833s as far as know. |

Which is typically found in: 1975-1976 Darts/Dusters/Valiants/Dart Sports 1976-1980 Aspen/Volare I don't think the Henry J would be a "bolt in"...you'd have to pull the bellhousing and see if it can modified to accept the tranny... the A-833 would be an easier bolt in, and at least the forward gears are all synchro. -D.Idiot |

Thx, I found this list : The overdrive configuration with a 23-spline input appeared in these vehicles: o 1975 to 1979 Valiant, Duster, Dart, Scamp, Swinger, Volare, Aspen (3.09:1 ratio first gear) o 1975 to 1987 Dodge light-duty pickups and Dodge and Plymouth Vans (3.09:1 ratio first gear) o 1977 to 1979 Diplomat and LeBaron (3.09:1 ratio first gear) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So wether originally installed behind a V-8 or a slant 6, the input shaft is the same ? And let me get this straight: I need the newer slant 6, A883 bellhousing & clutch fork along with the A883 tranny. And if I get the bell housing & fork from any of these above, direct bolt in to 1963 170 /3 speed car? Bell crank & rods from stock 63 Dart 170 3 speed car useable ? A883 will bolt to old 1963 3 speed crossmember ? Thx, in advance for further review. |

The A833OD and it's bellhousing will bolt right into the car. The transmission mounts are the same. You will need to lengthen the bellhousing support for the clutch Z-bar. The Z-bar should be level when installed. You'll need a different driveshaft as the A833 uses a slip yoke and your '63 will have a bolt-on driveshaft. You'll need a '66-'67 speedometer cable as the '66 and newer transmissions use a different speedometer adapter in the trans. You'll need to cut a big hole in the floor for the shifter and linkage. |
