Post subject: Can't get it right!!
PostPosted: Mon Aug 19, 2002 8:20 pm
I'm still having trouble with my '69 Valiant. I've tried adjusting the choke and the idle mixture and the result is always the same, smoke and carbon out the exhaust. When the choke is completely open and the engine is hot, It will belch gray/black smoke every time I rev the engine. I know that it's not oil because, I'm getting a carbon residue on the ground. I cleaned and rebuilt the carb, cleaned the original metal PCV valve and the oil breather cap, changed the air hoses and air cleaner, and adjusted the valve lash. I can hear an ocassional popping in the exhaust and every once in a while, it's repetitive. Do I need to look at the valves again? I can hear them tapping a bit. The car sat without being driven for a year. Is it possible that something else is plugged up from sitting and sludge build up?

Assuming all of your rebuild efforts were successful, I'd suspect an ignition problem - possibly bad cap/rotor, wires, points (?), condenser... That can cause smoke blowing and missing too. Skipping a timing chain gear might be another possibility.

Joel,
You have another SL6 car that is running good, right?
Why don't you swap carbs. as a test, to see if that fixes the problem, if so, it's time to get a different carb. for the 69

If the car has been sitting for a while, you may have sticking valves. Put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the engine and run it for a while to see if the popping goes away.
