 Post subject: Header Leaks

Hey guys, I swaped over to a set of clifford headers the other day and I'm already having problems with leaks. I did torq them. Is there a better gasket? How did any of you get by this problem?

Thanks in advance for any replys.

I am not sure this would work with sl/6 headers, but it helped on the SB headers on my '67 Cuda. I welded like 5/16" steel keystock across the back of the flange above and/or below the tube to stiffen the flange. Kind of a poor man's imitation of a thick flange header.

Always check the header's gasket flange surface for flatness, many are waaayyyy off. I bend / grind / file / sand to get this surface as flat as possible.

The Cox boys have a nice thick gasket and you can use some high temp sealer if needed. (I use the sealer on the header side only)
If you use some sealer, install and make contact first, wip-up excess sealer and leave the assembly "light contact-snug". Let the sealer set-up for at least a few hours before doing a final tighting.
