Mine has the odd top mount.
Lets see if I can get a photo or two to post.
If that worked. Needs a lot of work, but does start, runs well, and drives. Just a bit of body work, when I get time for it.

I have a 1960 valiant wagon. I'm thinking I would like to put A/C in the car, and would prefer an original under-the-dash unit. I understand A/C for these cars became an option in 1961. Does anyone have an 'original' dealer-installed '61 unit that I could look at? I've never seen what it looked like. |

I'll be watching this thread. Wish I could help you, I also have a 60 Wagon that's going to get A/C, and like you I would like to keep it looking original as possible. |

Does your 60 wagon have the alternator mounted up top the water pump, like mine? Or on the side, like the 61's+. |

I'm thinking that since this one has power steering, might be best to use a late model compressor mounted over where the alternator would be on a later /6. |

I think that's our only option if we want to keep the current setup - a modern compressor mounted where the alternator would go. The only issue might be fitting it in the current space: the 61's have the sheetmetal on the side of the engine bay 'bumped out' slightly to allow the alternators to mount there (if memory serves). BTW - if the engine in your 60 is original and unchanged, it should be the 170, not the 225: the 225 wasn't available until 61. |

I have not seen one of these cars in person, so I am guessing on this. If you mount the A/C compressor on the pass side (where the alt is on later cars) I think you will have problems with the belt clearing the front of the head, in the bypass hose area. It will also be a major pain to change #1 spark plug. If it would be possible to move the alt to the pass side using later alt mount, you could then mount the compressor on the driver side using either the stock late style mount, or my improved mount. Can you get some better close up shots of the component mounting, including the power steering, and the belt routing? |

The major problem with relocating the alternator on a 1960 Valiant is that the factory head of that vintage does not the 3/8-16 unc tapped boss on top of the water outlet area. This tapped hole holds the other side of alternator's "slider bracket". DD |

I just bought a 60 V200 for my wife that has the under dash air and it still works well.The compressor is a rectangular unit mounted above the alternator on the drivers side.I was told that this was a dealer installed unit and most likely a York unit.I will be driving the car home Saturday and will post pics if you would like. I'll get under the hood on the wagon tomorrow, and get some pictures from different angles. First chance I've had in a month (on the road since June 10th). Kind of wonder sometimes if this project is ever going to get off the ground. |

I took some pics Saturday and will post them tomorrow.The unit is a York and was installed on the car around 64-65.The unit mounts above the alternator on the drivers side and the compressor bracket sandwiches between the alternator mount and the block,goes upward into a T-style mount and the compressor slides side to side for adjustment. I will say that this arrangement makes it a royal PIA to change the alternator as I had to do this Saturday,10minute job turned into a 45 minute job and had to do it from the bottom. I have a 1961 factory mopar airtemp a/c that I will be putting into my 61 valiant at some stage. I will get some pictures of it and post up. In 62 they changed the compressor. |
