I came accross a nearly new Edelbrock 600cfm at a local flea market yesterday the guy had taken it off his truck before he sold it. he was asking $50 ,I got it for $40,"KA-CHING"! Rebuild kit,$40,"OUCH"! Anyway I'm totally inexperianced with Carter/Edelbrock 4 brl's and whould have have rather of got a 500cfm, but I might be wrong I'm currently running a 390cfm Holly/Offy/Hooker/1.5,1.75 valves/.465lift/270,cam/9.25to1 comp. I'm going to order the spring kit#1464 and Jet set#1479 is listed for#1405, #1480 is listed for#1407, no listing for model#1406 though ??? Does any one have an idea of what sizes would be a good starting point for a primarly dayly driver?? Thanks in advance for any help Bruce

Bruce,

I believe that the 1406 is the electric choke version of the 1405? That means that the 1405 strip kit is the same as the 1406. You will probably find that carb a little large for your engine, although a high-stall converter, tall gears, or a stick will help you there. I have run the 600 and the 500 on my cars, and both are doable, but the 500 is my favorite. One thing is that the 500 is simply a 600 (1405) with a different (thicker) shooter/venturi pod, so you may be able to order just the pod (from Summit?) and convert over to a 500. I found this out after buying first a 600, then a 500, and the parts all look interchangeable. I think even the bowl and carb top have the same part numbers on them.

The stock jetting will be pretty close, although you will probably want to richen up the primaries, and the secondaries to compensate for the lower air velocity through the venturies that the Slant provides versus a V8. The lower air velocity causes a lean-condition bog at throttle tip-in, especially going from idle or slight throttle to WOT instantly.

I played around a lot with jetting, and I think 98 or 100 jets in the secondaries and 70/47 rods and one step up from stock primary jets (95s or 98s?) in the primaries worked well with my '68 motor, which is a bit more built than yours.

Have fun,

Lou

Thanks Lou, Just what I was hoping to find out.I diden't know what jets might have got put in the thing, o yea, it does have an electric choke. I do have an 833 4spd,(no overdrive) the rearend however is geared 3.50 and that is on my list to change other mods I didn't mention; extensive porting and a angled carb spacer I made with 3.5" rise and offset, It increased torque noticeably, allowed me to drop ajet size and got rid of a slight knock when passing (diden't touch the timing) and you know it seems to startup even quicker. I'll give this 600 a try and keep looking for a forty dollar 500. Bruce

It starts/warms up quicker Idle speed is finaly consistant ,responce is great, unexpected torque and hp gains! I've got a 3.50 posi.tires are 295 15"(27"dia.) and I can finally get them spinning (in the parking lot at work) The holly 390 is history but would be good for a more stock upgrade Bruce
