Congrats on entering the slant 6 world. A Super 6 (factory 2bbl.) setup is the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to wake up your engine without scrificing gas mileage. Use the search function here and @:

<A HREF="http://www.slantsix.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro">http://www.slantsix.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro</A>

to search for "super 6", "super six", "2 barrel", "performance upgrade"...things like that. These setups show up on a regular basis here, on e-Bay and at your local junkyard. If you have limited mechanical experience, don't feel shy about asking questions---nobody here will think less of you for wanting to learn. That's what these sites are all about: pooling experience so we don't all have to repeat the same mistakes or overlook good solutions to common problems. I know I learn new stuff every time I log on!

Start with a complete tune-up including a valve adjustment. Try to advance the spark timming a little and be sure the mechanical and vacuum advance is working. (it should come-in quickly)

There are many other up-grades you can do but it is alway good to be sure everything is in good working order before you start swapping parts.
