The rear main seal is leaking on my Duster. Is there any kind of easy way to do this or is it a large undertaking?

Thanks!

Engine oil can leak out the back of a SL6 from 4 places.
- Rear Main Seal
- Rear main seal cap to oil pan gasketing
- Rear oil gallery pipe plug
- Rear camshaft bearing expansion plug

I have even seen oil running down from the rear of the valve cover and dripping off the rear of the oil pan called a "main seal leak".

Be sure to inspect carefully for the leak's true cause prior to starting repairs. Has the oil pan ever been off this engine, if so, it could be the re-gasketing job.
If it turns-out to be a rear main seal, it is a "large undertaking" to repair it.
(Personally, I would pull the engine to do that repair)

I cleaned it up fairly well then went back to look at it. It's not coming down from above. As far as the pan ever being off, who knows. I bought it in 2000 with only 40k on it. The leak isn't terrible, it just leaves a little film of crap on the back of the car after a highway trip.

Working with the engine in car, is there a way to determine that the cause is the rear oil gallery pipe plug, and not the rear main seal or rear main seal cap to oil pan gasketing?
