well, i've got the block at the machine shop for the rebuild, but now want to consider heads. i would like to get away from the leaky spark plug tubes and go with a later head. would the 75-80 heads work alright on my 72 block and what casting # should i look out for? mine has no smog pump or egr. oh ya, does all heads oil the same way ? thanks, dave.

You can use any of the later heads all the way up to the end. The '81-'87 hydraulic head will accept the mechanical rockers also. Only major differences will be the '81 and up take the late style valve cover, and '75 or so on up will have a different 'step' style bolt in the rear rocker stand instead of a 3/8".

The '75-'80 heads have small holes for the pushrods that you would not be able to fish lifters out through, if that is a worry.

Yep. Fel-Pro #ES 12794 is a box of 6 gaskets for the spark plug tubes. I think I paid $4 for the whole set.
