Post subject:  Carter BBD throttle arm seems wrong

I've search this board and a few others and can't really find an answer.

My '75 Duster was converted by the previous owner to Super Six setup complete with Carter BBD. The problem is in the throttle lever ratio. The throttle cable end is pinned to the throttle arm where the ball stud would be, there is no actual ball stud. The carb throttle arm seems very short. At the gas pedal there is very little movement required to crack the throttle open well over half way. I pretty much drive with my tip toe just feathering the throttle. Somehow the previous owner hooked up the kickdown linkage (which works) but the throttle just seems "off" a bit. I am thinking of adding a 1" long throttle lever extension to change the ratio of the throttle arm.

My concern is that every time I touch the throttle I'm punching big shot of gas from the accelerator pump when it really is not needed.

I'm also not happy with the throttle return spring setup. I know the carb has one on it but finding a place to mount an extra spring is a little tough. I though of making a bracket off the back of the A/C compressor. The carb's own return spring doesn't quite close the throttle valve all the way.

Summit & others have universal throttle springs & brackets if you don’t want to fabricate one. Also these same places have adapter brackets that can be affixed to your carburetor’s throttle arm to take advantage of a Chrysler accelerator’s articulation.

Could you possibly post a pic? It would greatly help us to figure out if thins were "jerry rigged".

Let me try to get a pic at lunch today. Sorry about that, I should have thought about it.

No that definatly is not right. Here is a pic of how I have it on my 66 Dart. I'll have to go out and get a pic from my 77 Volare wagon.

Hmm, my bracket seems to be bent down somehow.

I know the previous owner had to get the kickdown linkage added and "made to work" whatever that means.

I notice that the actual throttle cable mounting point isn't really that far off though. The lever arm ratio should be the same as yours. If just seems really aggressive.

Your bracket is bent way down. The throttle cable should be coming at about a 45* angle and yours is closer to 90*. The kickdown is on the wrong side of the throttle cable as well. It looks to me as if some one adapted a stick shift super six to your automatic. The carbs have a different mounting "stud" it isn't a ball stud like most Holleys have. If it was a stick the mounting stud only extends toward the carb and an auto trans with a kickdown it goes both ways. You can see the difference if you look at both of my pics. On both systems the throttle cable is mounted inward towards the carb on the stud and the throttle return springs connect to the stud between the ears of the throttle cable. There should be a bracket to mount the springs to. I had to make one out of bar stock for my 66 because I pieced that super six together.

I built a throttle stud that should fix that. I've attached a picture.

Thats a good fix right there Trent. If I find my digi cam tomorrow I'll take a photo of my BBD with the original throttle stud. It's not rigged up like yours is Oldspowered. And yes the accelerator cable should be on the inside and the kickdown link on the outside.

ok, this photo is not mine but its good quality:

The accelerator cable is disconnected but you can still tell it goes on the other end of that stud.

exoJil- the slot in the top kickdown linkage piece should be bottomed against the carburetor throttle stud. If yours doesn't travel all the way up to seat against the stud, something is wrong somewhere.

I bet exoJil just took the picture before adjusting the kickdown spring. If that spring has more tension it should fix the problem.

ExoJil, Thanks for the pic! Looks like mine, so I'm happy!
