I've got a neat issue.

Driving home yesterday from the store I was decelerating in 2nd gear to make a turn. Right before the turn, my engine suddenly sounded as if the ignition had been shut off. I made the turn, stepped on the throttle and it burped a bit but came back to life. I Continued on home another 4 blocks and parked. I let it idle and popped the Hood. Car was running fine, then it started chugging, died and then rolled backwards a bit.

Hmmm, that's insteresting.

Immediately after it stopped rolling around, gas started seeping out of well, everywhere. Today, I changed the needle valve and float, re-adjusted the float level per Holley instructions, and reassembled. It started and ran for about 10 seconds before flooding again. Adjusted the needle valve all way in, and then backed off 1 turn. Started the car, and it didn't flood but it was seeping from the seal on the valve under the needle adjuster. Ooook, so I removed the whole thing, checked to make sure the seal was there, and it was. So I re-installed, set it to 2 turns out, tightened it down really well, and started the car. It flooded within 10 seconds.

When I say flood, I mean fuel literally dripping off the boosters in the Carb.

This is a new needle valve and a good float. I am wondering if my fuel pump is putting out too much pressure. Anyone else ever had that happen?

Are you sure about the float?

I had an old pontiac with the plastic float that looked fine, only problem was that it absorbed the gas and sank...........

I can't say for absolutely sure, I would have to pull it apart again and fill a small container with fuel to see if it floats.

Its another one of those situations where no part store is capable of ordering just the float, and the cheaper trick kit doesnt have a float.

*sigh* Its not worth the aggravation to get frustrated, just have to see if I can find another float I guess.

The plastic float (even saturated with gasoline) still floats, it just doesn't float enough in the carb bowl to close the needle valve....

I had to weigh it on a triple beam balance to see the difference between the 'dry' float and the 'wet' float......

Get one of the black coated foam floats from Joe's Carb Shop in Lynnwwod.
Joe's Carb Shop is listed under the SL6 network.

There were several in the bin a few months ago so I bought a few for spares. I know they bought more after I tested it ......Gas will not penetrate it and should last for a long, long time.......

Either that or bend yours down allot more. I usually pull the acellerator pump housing off while its running and measure down to check the actual fuel level. That is a quick check. The manual gives you the level it is suppose to be at.....17/32????? I don't remember off the top of my head but I made a measuring device and marked it just for the 1920. That will get you spot on.
I wish you could still buy the glass bowls for the 1920's.
I suppose you could drill and tap the side of the bowl and install the four barrel style site glass.

That would be great Ted, except I have a 2300....

I actually found a "speed shop" here in town that I have been driving by for years, so today I stopped in and talked to the Guy. The shop is called Performance Racing Equipment, and is not a shop for Honda's. In fact, its exactly what I expected a speed shop to look like. Authorized Holley distributor to boot. I picked up a nice brass float for a cool 12.50, so that should solve my problem period.

Yay!

Steve Tepper is the last of the last...and a good guy to boot...he's done a lot of performance mods over the years, and still does dizzy recurves, installs annular boosters in holleys...My co-worker's dad has been racing a 409 powered nomad for 40+ years now...the rear-end in the car was rebuilt by Steve in the late 60's...other than changing the rear-end lube, the rear has never given him problems drag racing or cruising for 4 decades...

If I was more savvy in other brands, my dream job would be to own Steve's business when he retires.
