getting closer to finishing the engine rebuild and am down to the head. i've got a casting # 169 head and the parts store shows $425 and $65 core charge. they also show a 362, 447, and 600 casting for $310 and a $25 core. there both for a 72 225 and no smog. whats the difference in the heads, and can i use either one ? 115 dollars is alot of change. thanks, dave.

If you hit the home button above, then go to "Articles" there is a link near the bottom that starts with the word "Table" that lists the heads and numbers.
The 169 is the '67-'74 "Drool Tube" Head. The 600 is a peanut plug head.

I like the 169 head myself.

Is there something terribly wrong with your current head? It would be more cost effective to use it to rebuild if that's in the cards for you. For that kind of money, you can get a lot of nice work done to your "Core."

thanks cj, no, there's nothing wrong with the head other than 200,000 miles. the biggest issue down here is waiting around for them to do the machine work. there's only one shop here, and it takes forever to get something done. it took two weeks to get the block bored. i thought that by the time they milled, ground the valves, put in new guides and lead free seats it would be faster to just get another head. i would just keep my head for reserve for the sake of $25. thanks again, dave.

Contact Doc or Mike J and have them build you a head. I'll bet they can put something special together for you for that kind of money.

Unless the shipping is a snag. Where's down here?

Might be worth the effort.

Are you building something special? Stock build, or going for a bit more oompf?

There is information available that the machinist might find useful here if you want a bit more out of it. There is a lot of potential locked up in head work, just waiting to get out. :D

no, i'll be happy with a stock engine. i just want something that's good on gas and still can make a good looking car that my wife can drive. my "fast car and loud muffler " days are long gone. i was around when these things were new for around 2500 bucks. i went to the local dodge dealer in 71 and tried to buy a brand new super bee with a 440 4 speed for $3300. could"nt come up with the lousy $200 down payment. i think the payments would have been something like 70 bucks a month. boy, if we could only take todays money back in time for awhile. been in love with mopars ever since. dave.

My Son is stationed up in Columbus, MS. If you need a head I have Many. Contact me via PM if you need one. I even have some with OS valves and Milled (however they would be more).
I get over there about once a month.
Frank
