This looks like a simple thing and so far it hasn't been a real problem.

The alternator gauge reads all over the place when i drive the car. The more electrical i use the lower the gauge gets.
Mostly this comes up at night, when i've got the headlights on, and i'll stop at a light and idle, everything goes dim and the blinker gets slow.

The problem as gotten gradually worse over the last 6 months.

The light turns green and i hit the gas: everything powers right back up and the gauge starts looking good again.

My plan right now is to have the battery tested. Car maintainance is news to me though i'm used to being handy.

You might have to replace the brushes in the alternator.

You could also have bad connections on the amp gauge or firewall connector, or a bad ground on the regulator. You should inspect all the wiring connectors to be sure. If something is not right, it will usually start generating a lot of heat, which will eventually ruin something.
