Due to putting a rear steer rack and pinion in my pure race car,I have to re do the pipes from my Clifford shorties to my Y pipe.Since I have to re do them I was wondering if there was a better length for max horsepower.Never did really like how I did them the first time and dont want to lose hp.They will bee closer to equal lengths this time.Any thoughts or knowledge appreciated.Guzzi Mark

I would put the Y junction about 2-5" behind the trans X-member. Tilley said that was best and I have done some testing but not comprehensive.

What diameter pipes in primary and into Y?

Wouldnt putting the Y pipe behind the cross member be dependent on which headers you use? I am running Clifford shorties and my primaries are 2 1/4.I measured mine and one is 34 inches long and the other one is 24 inches long.Would be easiest to redo the longer one to get closer to the 24 one.Wondering what a ideal lenght would be and wondering if going to 2 1/2 would help or hurt.Mark

Hey Mark are you SURE your primaries are 2 1/4. I can see the collector outlets. My header primaries are 1 1/2 on street pipes and 1 5/8 on all out Race pipes.I would think anything larger would loose all of the scavenging.

Sorry, I may have confused things. I meant secondaries out of headers. 1.5" is the Clifford Shorty primary diameter. 2.25" is probably his secondary pipe diam. I haven't played with equalizing those secondary pipe lengths. There may be some power there, yes, but not a huge amount.

No idea if 2.5" secondary diam will help, but seems unlikely. Hard to see that a 300 HP engine needs dual 2.5" pipes, but it's possible.

I recall the ideal is between 28 and 34 Inches for the 2 1/4secondaries going into a Flowmaster Y and then to a 3" single pipe.

Yea,I screwed up,SECONDARIES are 2.25. Will try to even them up and get them closer to 30.Will stick with the 2.25 cause I know that works and I have everything to do it,and I will need that little bit more clearence.Will bee tight.Mark
