Hi, Still new to all this. Got the slant a year ago and put 15w 50 synthetic Valvoline oil in it, this is what my local mechanic said to do, from what it said on the bottle seemed like it suited was for older cars, 6 cylinder cars that could be used for towing and so on. Is this a terrible thing? Also I read slant 6 dan's way to flush out all the oil and gunk from the inside, Is there an easy way to tell if i should do a full flush (I plan to follow his excellent advice), Also since it hasn't been used regularly in the last few years (turn it on once a week has driven a few 50 mile trips etc not alot) Could this cause problems or anything (I am just curious, don't think it would)? I also plan to change to a proper fuel filter (also slant6dan has shown how), Has anyone had any issues when doing this so I could avoid them? And i've taken the exhaust off and installed some extractors, They are correctly installed no vacuum leaks etc. After I let the car run at Idle and get to normal running temperature when I rev to 2500 - 3000 it seems to be as high as it goes. I haven't pushed the car past 3000. and the few times I drove it on the road It didn't have a tacho, but I don't think that the rev clock is the problem, any ideas? I am thinking maybe just not enough fuel, or valves need adjusting, or carb needs calibrating, (still the original one barrel) When I installed the new dizzy and elec ignition (pack from pentastarparts.com.au it was setup properly using a timing gun etc. Did some research before I asked this and searched the forums Just want to know if there is anything I've missed. thankyou to all! |

Wow, lots of questions there. Sounds like you are hard at work/play... Installing headers (extractors) will make your mixture leaner, so your carb might have to be jetted up 2-6 sizes, or install a bigger carb like a Carter BBD 2bbl. Do not go too big on carb with stock compression, head, and cam. That oil is fine, but it is not necessary to have such a heavy weight. I would use 10w30 or 5w30. You can flush your engine, but if it is running fine and not burning lots of oil, then I would leave that alone. Simply change the oil and filter more frequently (say every 1000-3000 km) for the next few oil changes and that should help clean things up. Best, Lou |

50-grade oils are quite heavy and were not specified in my 1965 Valiant Owners Manual. A 30-weight (0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30) oil should be fine in most cases. I would use an HDEO rather than a racing oil as HDEOs have stronger detergent/dispersant additives. If you're doing a lot of towing and your engine oil runs very hot, I would use a 15W-40 instead. As for flushing sludge from your engine, an HDEO will have some cleaning effect and is safer than a flush. Many people on BITOG seem to like AutoRx or LC20 for cleaning sludge. |

Thanks guys very helpful! I've seen the carb adjustments in the sticky. Just wondering if i have a stock Aust 225L slant with the single bbl. Is that the BBS? (at the moment that's what I think it is). Bit of a shame really, it just seems to redline at 3000, like my parents new car does... (though it redlines at 7000.) |
