Post subject:  17 inch wheels for F body

Going to be picking up a 78 Volare 4 door next week. I was wondering if the 17 in. mustang bullitt wheels will fit an F body? I know you can get them on an A,and sometimes without spacers.Does the F body have more room or less? I like the looks of the bigger wheels and the better tire selection.

Thanks

F-bodies have larger wheel wells. The center bore of the Mustang wheels has to be opened up a little to fit over Chrysler hubs and axles. I tried my Mustang Mach I wheels on a '79 Newport and they fit fine.

The only way the Mustang wheels fit the rear of an A-body without a spacer is when a wider rear axle is used. '65-'67 B-body rear ends come close to the ideal width to use the Mustang wheels. I have a '65 Satellite rear end going into my '66 Barracuda right now.

Finally found the wagon with the Mustang wheels. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32601

Josh-

You the man! I thought I saw an F body wagon with them on there. It appears he used spacers to get the center bore to work with his hubs/axles. I wonder if I just opened up the center bore on the wheels if the would fit no problem? I like the way these wheels look, and they are cheap.

On the a body,I knew about the B body rear needed in the back to not use spacers. I was going to do this with my 67 Dart, but had to sell it before I got the chance. Now im an F body guy.

I wonder if I would need longer studs? The hub on the mustang wheel appears to be pretty thick.

Thanks again,
Jared

So it seems that I would need a spacer? I dont like the idea of using spacers,so I might just pass.

I wonder if the steelies from a new charger/magnum would work? IIRC they are 17x7 with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

well if you read the whole thing you would have seen that Cudda Zappa's road racing challenger uses billet (one piece of solid machined aluminium) 1.25" wheel spacers and has had no issues with them,

Ya, I know lots of people that run spacers with no problems. I just dont like the idea of running spacers, just personal preference.

Maybe I will buy one wheel and do some test fitting. I have known guys that run the mustang wheels on the front of a bodies with no spacer,so if the F has more room I might be ok up front. If the rear only needs 1/2" or so I may consider it.
