While driving up a long steep hill the other day I noticed the lack of any 3-2 or 3-1 kickdown shifts. Later I checked all my shift points against the FSM. It seems my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts at WOT (and to some degree closed throttle) were a bit low at least 10-15MPH lower than the low end of the shift point. I also don't have any kickdown shifts at all, at any MPH. Also, it only shifts back to first at 2-3MPH (or maybe less)...

There are kind of a lot of suggestions in the FSM, can anybody give a solid checklist? Something in order of probable cause?

Sounds like the kick down cable to the carb is out of adjustment, it moves or slips from time to time.
I adjust mine by holding the throttle wide open by hand engine off and pull the kick down cable as taught as I can. Still holding it in place and letting off the throttle then tighten in place.
Hope this makes sense and I'm sure someone will come along shortly and have an easier way.

Hmm, I already adjusted (more like verified, since it wasn't out of adjustment) the kickdown linkage as per the FSM. Also, my kickdown is rod driven, if that helps at all...

Josh, when you put the pin holding the firewall assembly in place--- did that put the carb at WOT?
The tranny linkage has a slider, that sometimes contracts.
Try lengthening that a bit.

If memory serves my 62 would line up like the fsm showed but would not shift crisp.
I adjusted the slider out & it improved. Trial & error.

Pin as in the junction between the throttle rod (which rotates) and the kickdown rod? The throttle was closed when the they line up.

Maybe, I'll give it another shot when the ground dries. So nobody thinks its a band out of adjustment (or worse )?

I cannot give step by step advice-- my shift points were screwed up. I adjusted according fsm, it got better, I then moved the slider -- it improved a bunch. (trial & error on the slider).
If your tranny fluid is not burnt---, as for adjustment of the bands-- i nver did this --although it sounds like it cannot hurt-- & is fairly simple to perform. Lawrence
