well, it seems like i'm not destined to get my slant rebuilt. after three weeks in the machine shop, i went to check on it and they have'nt even touched it. so i found a 72 dart with a perfect engine that has the typical body cancer and bought it. it came with a 318 but now has the 6, but i think it's a later year. where is the date of man. stamped on the block? i'm bound and determined to get this thing running sooner or later. lol. thanks, dave.

So what's the question? If you get the code off the top of the block by the alternator mount and the casting number and any letter codes by the number we should be able to tell you when the engine was built.

Triple A Dave, take a look here.

Block casting alphanumerical code found under first three freeze plugs.

Internal build info stamped on deck of block under a layer of crud, located at front right hand side of block, protruding below #1 plug. If engine has been rebuilt, there is a good chance that factory stampings were milled off, and never re-stamped. Factory Service Manual will show how to decipher these stampings.

well, i got the engine out and still dont know what year it is. the pad under the # 1 plug is only stamped with an s. under the # 6 plug on the same pad is stamped cp118929. under the front freeze plugs is casting # 330-2. an inch or two further toward the back is casting # 7 20 81. and further down is # 1f. it is hyd. lifters. the block and heads are bare metal, and the valve cover is black. the link wjajr brought up does'nt show any block #s after 78. i want to freshen up the rings and bearings while it's out but need to know what year it is before i try to get any parts. any quick help is greatly appreciated. thanks, dave.

Sounds like it's a later cast crank engine.
Pull-off the valve cover for a quick look at the rocker arms, that will tell you if it's a mechanical (rocker arm adjustment screws) or a hydraulic lifter engine. (no adjusters)

well, i'm begining to think the 7 20 81 casting # is the year the block was made, but not sure. the block only has an "s" stamped in place of the year code which makes me think it may be a factory replacement block. every thing in it is standard size so i know it has'nt been rebuilt. that might explain the bare metal block and the rest of the engine being black. the funny thing is that none of the rods were numbered and it had no oil slinger in front of the timing chain. what don you think? dave.
