I think a contest is in order. None of the suggestion you guys gave were it. But they all helped me get to the solution a lot faster, THANKS!!! I thought it was the ignition advance but it was not, it only masked the real problem. So here is video clue lets see if you guys can figure it out too, with a little more info. it was the air filter housing the small gap around the bottom, where the air flows in at, was restricting the air flow into the carb making it pull a vacuum at rpms higher than 3000 under load. I punch four 1 3/8" holes on the side of the air filter cover and away the problem went. So the extra vacuum caused the vacuum advance to kick in at high rpm under load causing my detonation and lack of air flow. Now I just need to get a vacuum pot with less pull. Its kind of funny I probable took the air cleaner off and on 20 times working on this problem. and the problem was in my hand the whole time. Joe |

here is the really small gap  Here is the new air holes. total of eight. can not see the rest in the picture.  Also trimmed down the ring around the bottom plate. before  after  i'm also going to get a k&n filter because the vacuum still climb a very little bit at 4500 to 5000 rpm but nothing like it was before. My gap is either the same or maybe slightly larger and the carb never had any problems sucking air........... |

I don't know. But without the holes the vacuum gauge starts going up at about 3000rpm at wot. With the holes it does not start to budge until 4500rpm and then only about 1 or 2 in hg. Without the filter completely removed the engine never pulls a vacuum at all at wot, which is what you want, I think. I did not have this problem before I put a 2 1/4" exhaust on the car so maybe getting rid of the restrictive exhaust increased the need or air. I hope? It also shaved 2 seconds of my 0 to 60 times and three seconds faster 0 to 75. you can hear the engine pulling harder on the second run with the holes at high rpms. also I figured the area of the 1/8" wide slit that the air had to come through it is 1.706 sqin and the two 1 3/16" barrels of the 318 carb are 2.214". besides the holes look cool. After I get payed I am goint to get teh K and N filter and see if gets rid of that last little bit of vacuum at wot.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrJx_JdNhJo |

You may have a point with the exhaust opening up......... I'll find out if I ever get around to my 2.25" exhaust system. |

You made me measure the air cleaner..... (did mm and inches, then averaged result) Bottom OD 218 mm (8.5828") and 8 9/16 (8.5625") avg 8.57265" Top ID 223mm (8.7795") and 8.75" avg 8.76475" Gap area using avg: 2.6158 sq in..... which is equivalent to a 1.825" hole...... |

Why not upgrade to a 73 on up air cleaner? With a 76 on up you can add ram air!  and hot air for the winter months...Check out my set up. Just click on the red link below my name for pics... |

Nice looking car. I have a air cleaner in my garage that looks like the one you have but the hole does not fit my carburetor, if my memory serves me right the hole in the air cleaner is to small for the carb. I have. May be I can make it work? Sounds like a good idea. I will get a bigger air filter that way and may be even some cold air. and hot air for the winter months...Check out my set up.
