Post subject:  Crank seal help

I'm at the point of putting the crank in the block but for the life of me I can't tell which way the rubber main seal goes in. It looks right either way. Also the caps dont seem to want to fit as well as the seal cap. Do i need to do any filing to make things go in smoother? Thanks for any help given.

Post subject:  Yep...

Caps are pretty tight some sometimes then need a little tap from a rubber hammer...the seal should have an 'edge' or groove on it to help knock oil back into the pan..that should go inside. Check the articles section on installing the rear main seal for best success.

Good Luck,

The lip on the rear seal which bears upon the crankshaft faces inward. That way pressure in the crankcase forces the seal against the crank.

The caps fit tightly. You can break the square edge with a file, but that's about it. The seal cap will need a little sealer where it mates to the block.

Also take a look in the FAQ: Best of Doctor Dodge, Twin #2 - SL6 Engine Assembly, near the end of page 1.
