Does anyone know if there is an easy way to ID a Holley 1920 Economaster carb? Right now I'm using a '72 carb on my '73 Valiant because the one that originally came on the '73 got flooded with rust when my cheap plastic fuel filter let go. But I got to drive the '73 carb for a couple weeks before the problem arose and I remember getting extraordinary gas mileage. I'm wondering if it might have been an Economaster. If it was I'll certainly have it professionally rebuilt ASAP.

Thanks!

-Matt

Matt,

You can look at the pictures of mine by clicking on the red link below my name. Mine is a R7585 1920 Holley Economaster. When looking down the throat you will not see the common antenna looking spray atomizer. It is a wagon wheel spoke and hub discharge booster. This is a little more uniform and effective way of atomizing fuel with air at lower rpms..........It provides much quicker and stronger throttle response as well as good mileage.

Thanks Ted! Checked your pics. Looks like I have a couple plain old ordinary 1920's. Have you ever had any experience with standard 1920's vs. your Economaster? I see that you get 25+ with the Economaster... I guess what I'm really wondering is, what's the max MPG one can shoot for WITHOUT an Economaster? Do you by chance know of any places these days where one can acquire a 1920 Economaster? My '73 Valiant is my daily driver, and I drive A LOT! Would love to get the most bang for my buck.

Thanks!

-Matt

Yes, I have 5 or 6 dating from the mid 60's on up to 73. My worst one that I rebuilt gets 22 mpg. I found it sitting in a coffee can full of water under a pine tree. It was heavily oxidized, almost white......That is my first one and it cleaned up very well and have several more newer versions. All of them run better than any of my 1945's in terms of instant response, mileage, idle quality and hot start ability. The Economaster version has a very nice and immediate throttle response to the slightest movement. Even jetting up from a 56 to a 66 jet, it still gets great mileage if I can keep my foot out of it......:)
Mileage drops down to 22+ mpg with a #66 jet.

I would say at best 24 mpg with a 904 automatic and stock SL6 with a 2.76 ratio using today's 87 octane fuel during warm weather conditions. I drive over 120 miles a day and have closely logged my mileage. In the winter it drops down some do to the cold, snowy warm ups, traffic jams.

You might want to PM Doc, SL6Dan or some of the members on this site to see if you can pick one up. You can have the throttle shaft bushed and rebuilt. I have a dual plunger economizer body in mine. That provides a very healthy pump shot........
Put out a request in the parts wanted section! :D
