ok me and my dad had the engine rebuilt and put it in and it cranks but wont start? the ignition coil gets power, the distributor has spark, is there sumthing else? a special way for timing? we just lined up the notchs to "0" and set it to the first piston n made sure it was up top. we need help =( |

did you time it on TDC compression? it could be as simple as leaving out the distributor rotor. check the carb for fuel, look down the top and hit the gas pedal if it sprays fuel its probably ok. to check the ignition system grab a propane or map pipe torch, take off the end to get more flow, stick it in the top of the carb while covering the carb with your hand a little and try to fire her up. you can get the mixture right by moving your hand around. |

Sounds to me like the timing is off, may-be the distributor is not positioned correctly and/or the timing mark on the damper is not right. Pull the #1 sparkplug and find TDC by feeling for the #1 piston, as it changes direction. Try to find 10 degrees *before* TDC. Now loosen the distributor and take a sparkplug and stick it in the end of the plug wire and ground it to the head or block. Turn-on the ignition (or connect the hot wire) and rotate the distributor while you watch for a spark at the grounded plug tip. Snap, when you cross a place where the plug fires, you will see the spark jump the plug gap. Go back and forth with the distributor....snap-snap-snap, you will find the exact place to lock down the distributor, (right when the plug fires) again, the engine should be positioned 5-10 degrees BTDC. Try to fire the engine up and recheck the timing, with a timing light once it runs. DD |

If you had #1 at tdc and aligned the dots on the timing gears, and then put the distributer in for #1, you are 180 degrees off with the ign timing. When the dots are aligned it is #6 that is at tdc compression, and #1 is at TDC exhaust. |

Not really, but the line on the pully and the timing tab, will line up with number 1 at TDC compression (this is what you want) and also number 1 at TDC exhaust.

Maybe it has the wrong year balancer on it or the outer ring (pulley) may have slipped pull #1 plug put your finger over the plug hole and have someone else bar the engine over till you feel air pressure escaping around your finger keep going till the air stops then see if the timing mark is close to the TDC mark on your timing tab Brian |

im very new to this lol im only 19, so n e ways so pull out the spark plug and place my finger over the hole? and by bar u dnt mean crank correct? is my finger suppose to have a tight seal on it? oh yea, i guess it has a engine from a 1980 volare.
