Post subject:  offenhauser aluminum intake question

hello, i have a 1965 slant six dart.

someone my brother knows says he has an alluminum offenhauser 2 barrel intake i can have for $50

woohoo! my question though is, is this a direct "bolt on"? in other words, my concern is, my car doesn't have a throttle cable, it has linkage, and things that connect to the stock holley 1920 1 barrel carb. is there a particular 2 barrel carb that i can buy new that will match up with this offy intake, and my throttle linkage ok without any custom fabricating, etc?

I've never seen a 2bbl Offy intake. Does he mean two 1bbls? Offy made those and with the Offy linkage kit it will work with the rod linkage. There is still some work to be done. It's not completely plug and play. So, no, it's not just a bolt on, but the fabrication is minimal.

If it's a 4bbl intake or one that has been adapted to a 2bbl then the fabrication of linkages gets more serious and most folks switch to a cable throttle.

thank you. i haven't seen the manifold yet, so i honestly don't know. i am getting my information sort of "second hand". it's a friend of my brothers, and he's telling him, who's then telling me, lol.

i will get the piece in hand and have a look at it.

Well I got the intake, it's a mopar intake, not an offy. Brand new, in the box. any suggestions on what my best buy it for a carburetor and set up for throttle should be?

OK, that's not an Offy manifold. That's actually a rarer Mopar Performance 2bbl intake. It's worth much more than $50. The good thing about that manifold is you can use the factory Super Six carburetor and linkages. Bad part for you it's cable throttle.

ok cool. please bear with me, i'm not a total noob, but i'm still a rookie here,

you're saying i'll need to pick up a new gas pedal assembly, basically yank out the hole assembly i got in there now, from the gas pedal on the floor, to all the stuff all the way up to the metal rod linkage that "twists" and opens up the throttle on the stock holley 1bbl carb, and put in a "newer style" gas pedal assembly with an actual throttle cable, right?

is there a particular place and part number i can ask for to get that?

also, i've heard people talk about kickdown linkage, and i honestly don't know what that is at all.

i just took my carb off last week, and completely rebuilt it, and the ONLY stuff that hooked up to the carb was the metal rod "thingie" (excuse my ignorance) that twisted when you pushed on the gas pedal, and opened up the throttle blades on the carb, and the metal bar on the choke that came out of the exhaust manifold, and hooked up to the carb.

nothing else was "hooked up" to the carb at all.

basically i just put a new gasket on the intake manifold, put the carb back on the intake, put the throttle rod back on, put the choke rod back on, put the fuel line back on, one vacuum hose, and the one hose for the pcv.

Do you have a manual or automatic transmission? The kickdown linkage is more accurately called the throttle pressure linkage. It's not just for kickdown as on a transmission equipped with a vacuum modulator. The throttle pressure linkage actually changes the transmission line (operating) pressure.

The cable throttles were found on AC equipped slant cars and V8 cars. I'm sure there are part numbers in the factory parts books, but since this stuff isn't available new, except maybe the cable itself, factory part numbers are of no use.

If you look in the factory service manual you can see the differences in the linkages. I believe there are next to zero common parts between the rod and cable linkages.

my car is a 1965 dart. it is a manual transmission, 3 on the tree, 904 transmission i believe.

and edit, i may have just shown my cards, lol. i just want to make for certain. on a manual transmission, it really is as simple as i'm thinking here right? there is no kickdown on a manual, or anything else out of the ordinary. SO- it should really be just as simple as i'm thinking, right?

put on this new 2bbl mani, get a 2bbl carb, hook up the fuel line, pcv line, and vaccum line.

THEN- yank out my gas pedal and throttle "rod" set up, and then yank the throttle cable/ gas pedal assembly out of a /6 car, and install that, and i'm good to go, right?

Brian......The "904" is an automatic transmission. The four-speed is known as the "A833". I don't know the correct numbers for the three speed.
In your case, you won't have a trans kickdown linkage, so the only thing that hooks to your carb would be the throttle linkage and a throttle return spring.

I belive your correct as for changing over to the cable style throttle. You'll have to hit a boneyard, find a later A body and cannibalize the needed parts and fasteners to install into your car.
