Been looking for a slant six a-body for a lil while now. Found a 66 Valiant, 170, Automatic. Staying with the 170, what's it going to take to put it in the high 14's naturally aspirated.
Yes I have read the engine matrix and a great deal of the info here. I just want some opinions on engine mods, gearing etc. or info on actual 170 builds.
Thanks guys and gals,
Brad

A turbo would make 14s much easier. To get 14s with a 170 is going to take quite a bit of cam duration, compression and converter stall speed. 225s are easy to find and make a lot more torque which will make the car nicer to drive.

Good to hear another one sticking with the 170. I agree about the torque though. Down low there isn't quite as much snot, but she does like to rev though. I'm inclined to agree with Josh - it would take a lot to get a 170 that quick, if that's your only goal with the car.

I'm simply keeping the 170 because I just want a fun driver that's unique.

Short diff gears will help if your goal is low ETs. Given the revving capabilities of the 170 you could use something around the 3.9 or even 4.1:1 mark.

Remove as much weight as possible. Will be a little hard to get 14's NA, if you plan on street driving it.

I am not absolute on building a 170. I don't even have a car yet. I just wanted opinions. I do enjoy all the 'build' threads here. I'd love to see ETs with some of these builds from those of you that have raced your sixes.
I want my car to be street legal and plan tp do some commuting (2.5 miles to work) but I am not after a best all around street machine. This will be my "toy."
Thanks for the responses guys.
Brad

Remember a 170 is a "zero deck" motor. so if you mill the head, and/or put in a cam, you may have to notch the pistons for valve clearance, depending on how much milled, and how big a cam, so you MUST check for this.

Take a look at "Waynes World" in the 12 second range on our Slant Six Racing Results "Best Times" thread.
