Hey Guys,

I have been reading the posts on here about carbs etc for a while but am a bit confused to what the problem for my car could be. Sorry if i am repeating other posts that may already be here. Im pretty new to all of this so am trying to learn as i go

My '65 Valiant AP6 Regal has slant 6 with a Holley 1920 economiser carburetor and extractors. Cam etc are all standard. It is an automatic.The car warms up ok and idles fine, and when driving away from stop lights etc it drives fine and accelerates ok. The problem is when it hits around 2800 rpm if i put my foot down to pull up a hill or if i have stomped it flat, the car bogs down, and farts a bit.

I downloaded the pdf file on the 1920 carby, and have had a good look through it. It seems that my carb is missing its "venturi vacuum fittting" and "canister purge tube" also the "air cleaner tube fitting" has been plugged. The choke isnt hooked up but is held open by a small spring so it doesnt close up. The choke diaphragm isnt hooked up either.

The strange thing is that when the car is warming up or has been started in the garage, there is black crap coming out of the exhaust pipe leaving residue on the floor. My guess was that this meant the car was running to rich, however after cleaning the carby out with cleaner etc and giving it a small blast there now seems to be white smoke coming out and its backfiring?? which i thought meant to lean......I have checked the spark plugs and they arent fouled up but seem to be the colour of almost burning to lean.

My other thought was that the accelerator pump isnt working properly, but it seems to pump fuel through. Is it most likely because the jets are too small?

I also saw the post about drilling out a small hole in the throat of the carb where the factory has closed the gap off. Currently this hole is open, but has a small surround inside it that makes it smaller.

Im not really sure what to do from here, so any help would be greatly appreciated........ Hopefully i havent confused you guys as much as i already am...... haha

Fuel pressure may be too low, caused by a bad pump, crud in filter, blocked line. Or, improperly adjusted float level. Or, someone has assaulted the innards of your carburetor as has been done to the choke.

Bogs can be caused by too much fuel, or not enough fuel at the time of a large throttle opening. Your problem acts as if it is lean.

This black stuff maybe the result of that choke not opening fully previous to someone wiring it open, and you have finally blown out the carbon build-up.

Probably it is time to rebuild your carburetor, and locate & replace its missing parts. Also a valve [url=http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=72139&highlight=#72139] lash adjustment[/url] should be performed as outlined in “Engineâ€￾ Stcky.
